Sources of information for stress assignment in reading Greek

چکیده
To assign lexical stress when reading, the Greek reader can potentially rely on lexical information (knowledge of the word), visual–orthographic information (processing of the written diacritic), or a default metrical strategy (penultimate stress pattern). Previous studies with secondary education children have shown strong lexical effects on stress assignment and have provided evidence for a default pattern. Here we report two experiments with adult readers, in which we disentangle and quantify the effects of these three potential sources using nonword materials. Stimuli either resembled or did not resemble real words, to manipulate availability of lexical information; and they were presented with or without a diacritic, in a word-congruent or word-incongruent position, to contrast the relative importance of the three sources. Dual-task conditions, in which cognitive load during nonword reading was increased with phonological retention carrying a metrical pattern different from the default, did not support the hypothesis that the default arises from cumulative lexical activation in

Constraints for computational models of reading: Evidence from learning lexical stress
Models of reading have typically focused on monosyllabic words, consequently lexical stress assignment has been neglected in such models. Yet, determining how and when stress is applied in naming is an important consideration in providing a comprehensive account of reading processing. A corpus analysis of English age-appropriate reading materials between ages 5-12 indicated two properties: a ge...
متن کاملStress in Context: Morpho-Syntactic Properties Affect Lexical Stress Assignment in Reading Aloud
Recent findings from English and Russian have shown that grammatical category plays a key role in stress assignment. In these languages, some grammatical categories have a typical stress pattern and this information is used by readers. However, whether readers are sensitive to smaller distributional differences and other morpho-syntactic properties (e.g., gender, number, person) remains unclear...
متن کاملStress assignment in the development of reading aloud: Nonword priming effects on Italian children
Two experiments investigated the development of two aspects related to stress assignment in reading. First, we tested whether the role of distributional knowledge concerning stress changes with the development of the reading system; second, we tested whether stress information is computed independently of phonemic information since the first stages of reading acquisition. We ran two identical e...

Although the result of reading in reading comprehension is crystallized, the main prerequisite for reading comprehension is reading fluency. The purpose of this article is to study the definitions and related factors of reading fluency. Reading as cognitive activity Describin...
متن کاملStress assignment in reading Italian: friendship outweighs dominance.
Stress assignment to polysyllabic words is the only aspect of the pronunciation of written Italian that cannot be predicted by rule. It could be a function of stress dominance in the language or of stress neighborhood (i.e., the number of words sharing an ending and a stress pattern). In two experiments, we investigated stress assignment in Italian adult and, most importantly, young readers. Wo...
